The paper aims to outline an interpretative path through the several and
sometimes contradictory readings that Francesco De Sanctis had in the University
of Turin, from Arturo Graf to Edoardo Sanguineti, going through the
exploitation attempted by fascism.

Arrigo, Nino
De Sanctis is always ready to double, as Jekyll and Hyde, with no fear of
the traps deriving from contradictions. As a philosopher, politician, man of
letters, Europeanist ante litteram, he is an eclectic and hybrid genius who is still able to fascinate us, with overwhelming passion, with the time machine of
history and literature to tell us again an engaging story. The story of the moral,
civil and religious consciousness of Italian people, where it is impossible to
separate politics, philosophy and religion from literature. Similarly to what
modern comparative criticism does.

The speech proposes to draw up a brief history of the main editions of
Francesco De Sanctis works, circumscribing the analysis area in the twentieth
century and the phenomenon of the re-edition, opening a comparison between
Laterza and Einaudi editions and considering the relationship between both
with the previous Croce’s action. The discussion delve into the Lessons, establishing
a comparison between the editions of Attilio Marinari and Croce
and dealing specifically with the publication of school notebooks. Finally, we
consider the important critical experiences of the novel Un viaggio elettorale
to the new national editional plan of the years 2000, which has never been
implemented.

After analyzing part of the De Sanctis essay devoted to the Sepolcri, but
also with links to other works by Foscolo, there is a picture of the essential
lines of the resumption of some genial intuitions of the critics of Irpinia and
their overcoming in the hermeneutic hubs of the twentieth century, Donadoni
and Croce in Fubini and Binni, Gavazzeni and Scotti in Muscetta and Di
Benedetto, highlighting the intertextual relations of Carme with burial poetry
not only English but also and above all French, by Delille in Legouvé.
