The paper focuses on the cases of Annie Ernaux, Didier Eribon, Édouard Louis and Marie-Hélène Lafon. It studies and compares the stylistic uses of variation in transfuge literature, but it shows how the narration of the transfuge linguistic experience has as its core theme the shame felt as a provincial speaker from an inferior social background, as much in the new environment as in the old one. Her linguistic interactions unveil a dual tension, rejecting both the vernacular family lexicon and the formal jargon prevalent in her career as a consultant. Drawing from Françoise Gadet’s research (2003), we will dissect colloquial vocabulary within its enunciative context, treating it as a performative act, and elucidate its nuances through consultation of general and specialized dictionaries. (2020), with the aim of highlighting the devices used by this Quebec writer to represent different levels of orality. After briefly recalling the characteristics of Tremblay’s writing and the thematic interest of the linguistic question in this novel, I will structure my analysis according to the typologies of fictional representation of orality defined by Catherine Rouayrenc (2010), namely “oralité normée”, “courante” et “marquee”. After reviewing the characteristics of each level, I will examine the linguistic features used by Tremblay.
