Mos patrius e pater ignominiosus

Abstract

L’articolo prende in considerazione il concetto di mos patrius, così come esso nasce e si evolve dalle origini della storia di Roma fino all’età augustea. In tale percorso si è fatto riferimento alla paura del padre nelle società antiche e, in particolare, nell’esperienza romana. Il concetto di mos patrius, così come il binomio pater familias-pater patriae, unitamente al problema posto dalla comminazione censoria della ignominia, sono analizzati in due celebri passi ciceroniani, de Rep. IV.6 e Cato Maior de senectute XI.37

The article takes into account the concept of mos patrius as it is formed and evolves from the origins of Rome's history to the Augustan age. In this way, reference is made to the fear of the father and the terror of patricide in ancient societies and, in particular, in the Roman experience. The concept of mos patrius, as well as the binomial pater familias-pater patriae, together with the problem posed by the censorial commination of ignominia, are analysed in two famous Ciceronian passages, de Rep. IV.6 and Cato Maior de senectute XI.37
