La lanterna magica. Scrittura e fotografia in Emilio Cecchi

Abstract

Il contributo indaga il rapporto tra scrittura e fotografia nell’opera del critico e saggista Emilio Cecchi. Se, infatti, l’esperienza dell’autore è straordinariamente ricca dal punto di vista della pratica fotografica e di quella precocemente iconotestuale, stupisce l’assenza, tra le sue pagine critiche e saggistiche, di un’esplicita riflessione sul medium. Nel presente contributo si intende approfondire tale contraddittorietà a partire da uno dei rari testi in cui la fotografia è tematizzata nella scrittura, il saggio-racconto Sul ritratto d’una bambina dormente del 1924. Si estenderà l’analisi ad altri scritti, editi e inediti, per far emergere le tracce di un discorso sulla fotografia discontinuo ma esteso nel tempo, proponendo infine di interpretare il rapporto tra i due codici nell’opera cecchiana attraverso la figura della lanterna magica.

The article investigates the relationship between writing and photography in the work of critic and essayist Emilio Cecchi. Despite the author’s extraordinarily rich experience in both photographic practice and early iconotextual work, it is surprising to find an absence of explicit reflection on the medium within his critical and essayistic writings. This contribution aims to delve into this contradiction, starting with one of the rare texts in which photography is thematized in his writing: the 1924 essay-story Sul ritratto d’una bambina dormente. The analysis will extend to other written works, both published and unpublished, to uncover traces of a discourse on photography that, though sporadic, spans over time. Finally, the relationship between the two codes in Cecchi’s work will be interpreted through the figure of the magic lantern.
