Abstract

Il saggio analizza un testo memorialistico poco noto del duca Sigismondo Castromediano che racconta dodici anni di prigionia politica tra il 1848 e il 1859. Il testo si distingue per il carattere fortemente letterario della descrizione del viaggio attraverso carceri e galere del Regno delle Due Sicilie e oltre, fino all’Irlanda, offrendo allo stesso tempo riflessioni sociopolitiche, ritratti umani vividi e una forte relazione con il territorio nel contesto del Risorgimento italiano. L’esperienza carceraria viene mostrata nella sua brutalità e disumanità, ma anche nell’umanità che emerge tra i detenuti, mentre la narrazione si sviluppa lungo un percorso che è allo stesso tempo politico, letterario e spaziale.

The essay analyzes a little-known memoir by Duke Sigismondo Castromediano, recounting twelve years of political imprisonment between 1848 and 1859. The text stands out for its richly literary depiction of the journey through prisons and dungeons in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and beyond, reaching as far as Ireland, while offering socio-political reflections, vivid human portraits, and a strong connection to the territory within the context of the Italian Risorgimento. The prison experience is portrayed in all its brutality and inhumanity, but also in the humanity that emerges among the prisoners, with the narrative unfolding along a path that is simultaneously political, literary, and spatial.
