Lo scontro tragico tra natura e tecnologia ne La Principessa Mononoke

Abstract

This paper aims at analysing the relationship between Nature and Technology in Princess Mononoke by Hayao Miyazaki. This complex relationship appears in many works of the director and it constitutes the key point in Princess Mononoke and in many other films as well. In the article are firstly examined the aesthetic, moral and social values that the author links to Nature and Technologies. Moreover, it is shown how Nature is the kingdom of beauty and purity, guaranteeing at the same time the harmony between different forms of life. Besides, Nature is regulated by a strong fate that limits the human possibilities to achieve power and knowledge. On the contrary, Technology is the key for the personal and social liberation, but it causes the loss of harmony and beauty of Nature. After this introduction, the paper examines the conflict between the two forces in Princess Mononoke and suggests a possible conclusion.
