«cose meravigliose in materia d’antichità sacra, che in vero m’hanno fatto stupire»: il santuario di S. Felice a Cimitile nel XVII secolo.

Abstract

Nel XVII secolo la straordinaria concentrazione di pregevoli testimonianze di età paleocristiana nel santuario di S. Felice a Cimitile, presso Nola, suscitò l’attenzione di diversi esponenti del mondo letterario, come attestano, tra l’altro, gli scritti di Luca Holstein e Francesco Barberini. Il luogo suscitava, invece, scarsa impressione sui vescovi di Nola che vi si recavano in occasione delle visite pastorali, per non parlare poi dei parrocchiani che frequentavano la basilica per le funzioni religiose. Una significativa eccezione è rappresentata dalle attività di restauro, valorizzazione e promozione messe in atto dal parroco Carlo Guadagni (1675-88) che, oltre a stampare due volumi dedicati alla storia del complesso basilicale, fece affiggere lungo l’iter devozionale delle epigrafi destinate a incentivare la devozione e illustrare ai fedeli le prerogative del santuario. La lettura incrociata dei risultati degli scavi, delle evidenze monumentali e della documentazione d’archivio permette di ricostruire le trasformazioni che nel corso del Seicento interessarono gli edifici del santuario, grazie anche all’edizione di inedito materiale epigrafico

In the 17th century the extraordinary concentration of valuable testimonies of the early Christian age in the sanctuary of St. Felix at Cimitile, near Nola, aroused the attention of various exponents of the literary world, as attested, among other things, by the writings of Luca Holstein and Francesco Barberini. The place, however, made little impression on the bishops of Nola who went there on the occasion of pastoral visits, not to mention the parishioners who attended the basilica for religious functions. A significant exception is represented by the restoration, valorization and promotion activities carried out by the parish priest Carlo Guadagni (1675-88) who, in addition to printing two volumes dedicated to the history of the basilical complex, had epigraphs intended to encourage devotion and illustrate the prerogatives of the sanctuary to the faithful. The cross-reading of the results of the excavations, the monumental evidence and the archive documentation allows us to reconstruct the transformations that affected the buildings of the sanctuary during the 17th century, thanks to the edition of previously unpublished epigraphic material too
