‘I duellanti’. Joseph Conrad, Ridley Scott e l’arte della spada

Abstract

Il saggio analizza I duellanti (The Duellists, 1977) di Ridley Scott come film storico a partire dalle scene di duello, che rappresentano un vero basso continuo che attraversa tutto il film. I duellanti, infatti, racconta la vicenda di due ufficiali degli ussari francesi, che si sfidano lungo l’arco dei quindici anni delle guerre napoleoniche, dal Consolato e Waterloo. Dopo alcune osservazioni preliminari sul film, il saggio passa poi ad affrontare il tema del duello e le sequenze di combattimento, usando il problema della simulazione della tecnica schermistica ottocentesca come occasione per ragionare sulla natura ambigua e contraddittoria del cinema storico.

The essay analyzes Ridley Scott’s The Duellists (1977) as a historical film focusing on the dueling scenes, which represent a real continuous bass that runs through the entire film. The Duellists tells the story of two French hussar officers, who challenge each other over the fifteen-year span of the Napoleonic Wars, from the Consulate to Waterloo. After some preliminary remarks on the film, the essay then addresses dueling and combat sequences, using the problem of simulating nineteenth-century fencing technique as an opportunity to reason about the ambiguous and contradictory nature of historical cinema.
