| it_IT |
| dc.description.abstract | In the early period of the twentieth century, Gabriele D’Annunzio, despite his reflections on musical theater had led him to declare melodrama a dead genre, approached the operatic environment giving in to the allure of that world, however fundamental in the Italian cultural tradition. He was attracted not only by his innate curiosity for culture, but also by the various musicians who in the first part of the twentieth century felt attracted to his personality and the intrinsic musicality of his verse. Relations with the musicians were at times deep and friendly. However, collaborations on an artistic level were not often equally fruitful. Often, D’Annunzio showed that he did not fully understand the needs of the musician when creating a work of an essentially musical nature; on the other hand, he who was the spokesperson for a new ideal of theater, could not even accept that his ideal should bend to needs that as a poet he did not feel. Therefore, an in-depth study of the nature of D’Annunzio’s collaboration in musical theater becomes necessary: was D’Annunzio or could he have been a true librettist? Perhaps the reason for the sudden abandonment of melodrama lies in the Poet’s awareness of this way of writing, different
from his feeling. | it_IT |
