This paper aims to illustrate the migration phenomenon in general, paying par-ticular attention to the italian social context; the analysis takes in consideration an interna-tional geopolitical prospective. In the last years, in Italy the incoming migration flows ap-pear to be significantly declining. In this connection several researchers think that a signal like this means a future exhaustion of migration flows in Italy. Based on a data analisys of residence permits, this contribution wants to demostrate that the italian immigration is growing up and, at the same time, it is getting thin. If we consider the data of foreign resi-dents, a territory sociology point of view shows as the migration stability connected to a plurality of national groups, had contributed to the permanent establishment of immigrants. This one concerns of a specific tipology of establishment developped from a connection between historical dynamics, migration chain and socio-economics elements of the differ-ent establishment territories. The final conclusion demonstrates that the rootedness of im-migrants enforced process of change in the organization of territory and of the society.

Methodologiesare explored to enriching migration theory, with an inter-disciplinary look into cultural expressions resulting from migration. Cultural and migration maps offer a comparative and diachronic insight into migration impulses and waves.Migration of ideas and techniques is also examined through artifacts resulting from forced or intended move-ment of people and experts. Two contemporary plays evolved from the stories of mi-grants/refugees offer probing and open-ended speculation about itinerancy, vagrancy, reset-tlement and economic emigration as part of social plurality. The tangible, visceral qualities of expression may shed light on issues too complex for verbal theory only. Approached is comparative examination of stylization in art and abstraction in theoretical inquiry. Asking: What kind of procedures and institutions retain connection to the vitality of the samples studied or portrayed? Proposing inquiry not only focused on issues in the world but also on how they are represented, measured and defined.

Cortese, Antonio
Between 1876 and 1925, in a lapse that includes the years of the so-called first Italian emi-gration phase (from 1876 to 1914, ending with the “great emigration”, occurred between 1900 and 1914) and the next decade leading to the beginning of fascism, in our country there are about 260 thousand migrants heading towards the Mediterranean countries in Af-rica (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt). Most of them were illiterate farmers, mainly from the Southern regions of the peninsula. They were running away from their own villag-es due to a deep crisis of agriculture, aggravated in the south by the latifundium and a ma-laria plague affecting many coastal areas. The long-lasting industrial and commercial un-derdevelopment does not allow to absorb the excess of labor supply generated by the pri-mary sector. The paper analyzes the formation (and relevant consistency) of Italian com-munities on the southern shore of the Mediterranean favored by job opportunities created by infrastructure investments promoted by the French authorities in the Maghreb and the process of modernization launched by the viceroy of Egypt and then carried forward by the English Administration.

Vulpiani, Pietro
Discrimination experienced by immigrants can only partially be captured by complaints re-ported by anti-discrimination institutions, because of the uncertain will of discriminated migrants of denouncing the racial harassment as well as social, cultural and political con-straints. Comparing the number of reports followed by judicial authorities and equality bod-ies with the results of national statistical surveys is possible to fill the gap between experi-enced and reported discrimination. The article will present a comparison between the num-ber and trends of complaints received by the Italian Equality body against discrimination during ten years, and data from a national inquiry of the Italian Institute of Statistics de-tecting the experiences of discrimination suffered by foreign nationals resident in Italy. The numerical chasm between the two reporting procedures shows the great variability of per-ceived, experimented and complained discrimination, offering at the same time an in-depth and original overview of xenophobia and discrimination in Italy.
