This essay follows the major milestone of the international success of Italian sung, from its early
days in the grand opera to the 20th century in the song. This objective is accomplished by focusing
not only on the language of the original texts, but also on its many adaptations in foreign
languages. With this approach the paper highlights the main formal elements, of the language
system (morphology, syntax, prosody) and of the culture (meter, rhymes, melody), which all
played such an important role in the success of Italian in the music world. These results support
a positive answer to the long-standing issue concerning the importance of the formal elements
in the global success of Italian sung.

The well known strong influence of Petrarch’s lyric on the French Renaissance poetry withness
the key role played by the Italian culture at that time. The rediscovery of the Canzoniere, between
1533 and 1550, can be seen as part of a rich cultural program linked to the wider expansion
of the Valois monarchy, which is based on military power and politic influence. In this context,
new socio-political dynamics can be observed in conceiving life at court and education, including
some linguistic aspects such as lexical borrowings from Italian. The imitation of Petrarch’s
love poetry is focused on a class of traditional themes associated to the poet’s persona, like suffering,
fidelity, and pure love. Petrarchism implies a peculiar conception of poetry and of poet’s
dignity, which allows the Pleiade’s poets to build up their common image as a group.

Giovanni Boccaccio’s success in France coincided with the spread of Italian Humanism. His
fame was only rivalled by Petrarch’s and it arose and developed in the shadow of the illustrious
philosophus moralis, who was his great friend and “protector”. However, only a few of Petrarch’s
works were translated into French, while French translations of Boccaccio’s Latin works along
with that of his vernacular masterpieces enjoyed much greater success and, over the centuries,
circulated much more widely and in different social milieux. Without doubt the work by Boccaccio
that met with the greatest success, not only in literary circles but also amongst the aristocracy
of the time was the Decameron. Special attention should be paid to this work compared to
the others, also because of the circumstances surrounding the French translation, along with its
large and varied manuscript tradition. Of the hundred novelle, the tale that achieved the greatest
popularity was that of Griselda, translated into Latin by Petrarch and source of a number of
other works ranging from literature to theatre.
