<title>Giovani, religione e pluralismo culturale: percorsi identitari e socializzazione</title>

<description>Giovani, religione e pluralismo culturale: percorsi identitari e socializzazione
Crespi, Isabella; Ricucci, Roberta
According to Sayad (2002), migrations play a 'mirror function', i.e. they allow us to refocus on issues that are already present in immigrant societies but have been overlooked in scien-tific-political analysis and debate. This also happens in the research on the relationship be-tween young people and the sacred. The becoming young and adult of the children of im-migration and the definition of their identities, including the religious one, have given rise to a flourishing season of studies on how religious sentiment is expressed in private and public space among those who are - for their own or their family's biography - an expres-sion of multicultural Italy. The contribution introduces the theme of the monographic sec-tion by recalling how from a season of scarce attention, whether and how the youth seg-ment of the population relates to aspects of religiosity has become the object of investiga-tion and analysis. The emergence of Italy as a country of immigration and the comparison with growing communities of Muslims has then added a specific lens dedicated to the dy-namics and processes of socialization, interiorization, management and visibility of being Muslim.

<title>Between Assimilation and Discrimination: Immigrants’ Religiosity in Europe</title>
<link>http://elea.unisa.it/xmlui/handle/10556/7149</link>
<description>Between Assimilation and Discrimination: Immigrants’ Religiosity in Europe
Molteni, Francesco
Given the sharp increase in migration flows, the issue of immigrants’ religious assimilation and its impact on integration and discrimination has become a hot topic. This article refers to the debate between assimilation and reaction theories in order to shed light on the effects of both the destination context and the passage of time on immigrants’ religiosity. Using the nine waves of European Social Survey data, I show that non-Muslim migrants display tendencies towards assimilation, with second generations being more similar to the native population than to the first generations in terms of levels of religiosity. Conversely, Muslim migrants are seen to resist more to assimilation pressures, thus reinforcing a reading based more on ethnic reactions. In addition to this, the data clearly show that there is a specific sector of the migrant population – younger second-generation Muslims – who feel a greater sense of discrimination because of their religion compared to both people from different religions and to their first-generation parents. This makes them a very relevant group to study because of the effects of this discrimination on socioeconomic and educational integration.

<title>Giovani musulmani italiani. Appartenenza religiosa, socializzazione e agenzie socializzative</title>

<description>Giovani musulmani italiani. Appartenenza religiosa, socializzazione e agenzie socializzative
Crescenti, Martini
In recent decades, the Islamic community has seen the emergence of new generations of Muslims who find themselves having to negotiate between their Islamic affiliation, their family ethnic culture and their Italian culture in order to be and feel fully included. This causes them doubts and second thoughts about their belonging to Islam, and they expe-rience challenges and conflicts in their relationships with their families, peers and ac-quaintances. On these considerations, we present a qualitative research, conducted in 2020, which analyses the relational and social dynamics through which young people con-struct their belonging to Islam. The analysis is based on ten interviews with young Mus-lims with roles of responsibility in some local and national Islamic associations, which can offer an overall and differentiated view of the phenomenon. The results analyse the young people's socialisation pathway in three agencies considered central in their lives: family, youth association, and social media. On the one hand, the family constitutes a sig-nificant space for building belonging to the religion, since it is the first agent that forms according to Islamic values; on the other hand, associations and social media represent spaces of autonomous choice in which the young person builds his relationship with Islam

<title>Young Muslims and Islamophobia in Italy: What is at Stake?</title>
<link>http://elea.unisa.it/xmlui/handle/10556/7147</link>
<description>Young Muslims and Islamophobia in Italy: What is at Stake?
Premazzi, Viviana
The objective of the paper is to highlight the complexity of Islam in Italy, between first and second generations, the role played by the media in depicting Islam as the ultimate other-ness, discussing whether the success of Islamic fundamentalism in the world has resulted in new forms of Islamophobia in the Italian society and if and how Islamic communities re-acted to that and what are the risks for the second generations and the Muslim communities at large. Thanks to a varied and extensive desk literature review analysis and qualitative in-terviews carried out in Italy with key informants (representatives of mosques and Islamic centres, presidents and directors of Muslim organizations of first and second generation, academics and experts on Islam in Italy), the contribution will outline the complex relation-ship between media, immigration and Islamophobia and the debate around it considering a national security perspective and the importance of social inclusion to prevent radicalism and to foster counter-terrorism policies.
