L'esilio di Castelao in Argentina
Abstract
At the beginning of his Argentine exile from Galicia, the eclectic artist and politician Castelao staged a
theatrical piece whose traditional, regionalist, comic-festive content and the wise literary use of galego
seemed to respond to the desire to awaken in a community of immigrants tending to disengagement a
feeling of nostalgia and belonging to their homeland. Os vellos non debem de namorarse, unanimously accepted as the greatest theatrical play of all time, was therefore represented with great success in 1941 , first in Buenos Aires and then in Montevideo. Presented as a simple game of love and death of three old careless, it is hard to believe, however, that it was only a good-natured farce and in fact turned into his spiritual testament.
