L’idea di un’Europa geopolitica. Una prima riflessione sui concetti di limes, impero e democrazia nella nuova percezione globale.
Abstract
The essay, starting from the recent proposal of three European leaders to work for a geopolitical Europe and on the basis of the well-established changes in the global consensus for which we now speak of a multipolar system, proposes to analyse the European Union (EU) from the concepts of limes and empire. The question is: is it possible to find imperialistic and exclusionary attitudes in the EU’s modus operandi? And if so, are they the result of a different international perception of the EU or, on the contrary, are they the consequence of a different political attitude of the EU? The way in which the concept of democracy is currently perceived at the global level, and of which, in its contemporary and western meaning, the EU has long been a point of reference, is also part of this pioneering reasoning. Finally, how aware is the EU of this new hypothetical condition and how far is it from the perception of European citizens? This paper is part of the study and analysis conducted over the past five years by the author with the aim of observing how the EU responds, given its current structure, to global challenges and how far these actions and solutions correspond to the will and perception of European citizens.
