Abstract
valori morali e spirituali. This study analyzes the function of the narrator in the first major sequence of The Betrothed, from the first to the eighth chapter. In particular, direct interventions are investigated, which are very frequent and of various types. From the Introduction the narrator establishes himself as the protagonist by interrupting the transcription of the anonymous manuscript. Furthermore, from the first chapter we can see how his first task is to connect the various documentary digressions. But the narrator also often comments on the story with meditative inserts in the more dramatic events, or with ironic jokes when the narrative lightens up with humorous and comic implications. It is precisely the variety of tones that pushes the author to create this dominant figure, who also becomes an indispensable guide for the reader. The overall result is explained by the fundamental choices of Manzoni, very aware of the delay of Italian literature for the novel genre compared to other European literatures; the narrator in The Betrothed also acts as a mediator for a consciously innovative operation by an author who opts for a poetics of the novel not aimed at mere entertainment, but proposes a novel with concrete realism and at the same time inspired by moral and spiritual values.
