Abstract
Starting from Bateson's observation that a "transcontextual genus of syndromes" connects schizophrenic disorders with "related behavioral patterns such as humur, art, poetry, etc.," the essay attempts a theatrical reading of the famous The Divided Self by R.D. Laing. By describing certain parallels between schizoid states and the acting processes, light is shed on the hypothesis that the dissociation between the "self" and the body may be considered a common root of phenomena that are, however, treated in very different ways in medicine and in the arts.
