I Posthomerica sono l’unico poema epico esteso che ci è pervenuto dopo Apollonio Rodio e prima di Nonno di Panopoli; per questo motivo, e per il loro rapporto con Omero (evidente sin dal titolo), testimoniano l’evoluzione del genere e il permanere delle istanze dell’epica tradizionale anche a secoli di distanza dalla composizione dei poemi omerici. Il duello di Euripilo e Neottolemo viene confrontato con alcuni episodi dell’Iliade, con l’obiettivo di individuare le riprese e le variazioni del modello omerico operate da Quinto nella rappresentazione della monomachia e delle questioni d’onore dei due eroi. L’analisi è funzionale a dimostrare come il ritratto di Neottolemo, campione ideale dei Posthomerica, coniughi caratteristiche tradizionali dei duellanti omerici con istanze nuove e scelte originali di Quinto Smirneo.; This study focuses on the most iconic features of the representation of duels and heroism in Homer and Quintus of Smyrna. The Posthomerica is the only long poem to survive from the period between Apollonius of Rhodes and Nonnus of Panopolis. For this reason, and due to its relationship with Homer, it provides valuable insight into the evolution of the epic genre and the persistence of traditional epic themes even centuries after the composition of the Homeric poems. I compare the duel between Eurypylus and Neoptolemus with selected episodes from the Iliad, aiming to identify both the adaptations and variations of the Homeric model introduced by Quintus in his depiction of single combat and the heroes’ concerns with honour. This analysis demonstrates how the portrayal of Neoptolemus, the ideal champion of the Posthomerica, merges traditional features of Homeric duellists with new elements and original choices made by Quintus of Smyrna. Aen. 12) e tra gli Orazi e i Curiazi (Liv. 1.23-26.1). Entrambi i duelli hanno conseguenze decisive per i popoli che si combattono tramite i loro campioni: forte, dunque, è il loro valore politico, in rapporto sia al dominio sul Lazio sia, in prospettiva, all’imperium universale di Roma. In secondo luogo, i popoli coinvolti nei due episodi sono affini e persino imparentati, nonostante i tentativi di alcuni personaggi, specie nella narrazione virgiliana, di evidenziare tra loro una presunta incompatibilità etnica: i due duelli considerati sono, dunque, il culmine di una sorta di guerra civile tra Troiani e Italici – qualunque sia l’accezione etnica da attribuire a questa denominazione – e tra gli abitanti di Roma e di Alba Longa. Infine, i duelli si risolvono nell’unificazione dei popoli in lotta: da essi, pur con alcune ambiguità specie nel testo virgiliano, nascerà un unico grande popolo, destinato a esercitare, nell’età di Augusto, il dominio sull’intero Mediterraneo.; After a brief introduction on the perception of the duel in the Roman world, this paper focuses on two pivotal episodes in the mythology that Rome has created about its own origins: the duel between Aeneas and Turnus (Verg. Aen. 12) and the fight between the Horatii and the Curiatii (Liv. 1.23- 26.1). Both duels have a strong political dimension due to the tremendous effects they have in relation to the imperium on the Latium vetus and, in perspective, on the whole world. Secondly, the peoples whose campions engage in duelling are close to each other and even cognate, notwithstanding the attempts by some characters (especially in Virgil’s Aeneid) to highlight ethnical incompatibilities between them: the duels are, then, the peak of a sort of civil war between Trojans and Italians – whichever ethnical implication is to be assigned to this term – in the Aeneid, and between inhabitants of Rome and Alba Longa in Livy’s narration. Eventually, both duels end up with the unification of the two involved peoples: a new and bigger people will be born out of them, albeit with some ambiguities especially in Virgil’s text, destined to wield power on the whole Mediterranean area in Augustus’ age. Particular attention is devoted to the figure of the knight and the representation of the fights that, in the texts analysed, assume different functions and meanings compared to the Oitanic sources from which the authors, mostly anonymous, take their inspiration, adapting their narratives to a new and heterogeneous audience.
