Abstract: The present article underlines the importance of autobiographical writing for the Italian famous writer Cesare Pavese. It discusses how literary criticism used the presence of obvious autobiographical elements in some novels of Pavese as a reference to underline many vague aspects and information about Pavese’s life and suicide. The article then analyses the autobiographical elements in two novels of Pavese, Il Carcere and La casa in collina, published together under the title Prima che il gallo canti.
