Verbi di ‘maniera’ e predicazione elementare in una prospettiva interlinguistica

Abstract

In this paper we argue that the fact that a verb can be interpreted as a ‘manner’ or ‘result’ predicate mainly depends on properties of the syntactic structure in which (nominal) roots are incorporates. Specifically, we assume that the dichotomy between ‘manner’ and ‘result’ is an effect of the syntactic template in which a given root is inserted and, in particular, the sub-event layer to which the elementay predicate that introduces the root is merged (‘ProcP’ vs ‘ResP’). This contribution intends to show that the presence in the lexicon of verbal roots marked for result and manner at the same time hypothesized by Beavers and Kuntz Garboden (2012) is at mosst an apiphenomenon.
