Abstract: This paper deals with the issue of the accession of the European Union to the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (so-called Istanbul Convention). The main point of reflection is the recent Opinion 1/19 of the European Court of Justice. The European Union has already approved legal tools that to some extent can guarantee the protection of women victims of violence. However, the conclusion of the Istanbul Convention will allow the EU to confirm its commitment to combat violence against women in its territory and globally, and to strengthen the current political action and the existing legal framework in the area of criminal procedural law.
