Abstract: How are museums evolving in their mission of being institutions not anymore dedicated only to collect and preserve heritage? What are some of the chal-lenges museums face today? How is the impact of new technologies affecting thenew mission and the renovated essence of museums? In this essay, the authors willbriefly explain how museums have evolved from being places of collection to be-come places of storytelling; they will introduce some international examples of mu-seums that make use of technological tools in their own visitor experiences; andfinally they will analyze the experience of M9–Museum of the 20th Century, aninstitution, opened in Venice in late 2018, that has made multimedia and interactivetechnology its distinguishing mark. In the conclusion, the authors will evaluatesome of the most relevant critical issues that lay in the interaction among technolo-gies and museum collections as presented in this essay.
