The article reconstructs the intricate relationship between football and politics during the 1982 World Cup in Spain, won by Italy and experienced as a moment of serenity for the country. Then, some speeches of the republican Prime Minister Giovanni Spadolini and socialist and former partisan head of State Sandro Pertini are analyzed, together with a series of articles belonging to the Christian Democratic, Socialist and Communist Party press in which the sporting event was used to convey political content.
