«Vi fo sapere che nono niende da dirive»: funzioni della scrittura epistolare nella Grande Guerra

Abstract

Questo studio esamina la corrispondenza inedita di una famiglia siciliana di contadini durante la Grande Guerra, concentrandosi sulle funzioni della scrittura. Dopo aver discusso criticamente il tema delle lettere e cartoline nella prima guerra mondiale, viene trattato in primo luogo l’aspetto formale dei testi, che si caratterizzano per la schematicità e la formularità con cui si sviluppa il repertorio tematico dell’epistolografia bellica. In secondo luogo, sono individuate le funzioni della scrittura secondo tre dimensioni: la performatività, il rapporto tra verità e inganno, la riflessione discorsiva sullo sviluppo della capacità di leggere e scrivere. Questo studio mira dunque a mettere in luce la complessità di queste scritture popolari come momento cruciale nella storia dell’italiano contemporaneo.

This study analyses the unpublished correspondence of a Sicilian peasant family during the Great War, focusing on the functions of writing. In the The subject of letters and postcards in the World War I is critically discussed, in the first place. Second, the formal aspect of the texts is dealt with, addressing the schematic and formulaic structure by which the thematic repertoire of wartime episolography is developed. The functions of writing are then identified, according to three dimensions: performativity, the relationship between truth and deception, and the discursive reflection on learning to read and write. This study thus aims to highlight the complexity of this kind of popular writings as a crucial moment in the history of contemporary Italian.
