Abstract: This article deals with Fanny Hensel’s journey to Italy. The written sources (the diaries, the letters Fanny wrote to her family in the course of this year) are confronted with the musical sources (a selection of compositions stemming from this experience, which are included in the Reise-Album and Das Jahr) in order to explain to which extent the emotions and feelings that can be read in the writings are reflected in the compositions and to what extent this trip, especially the stay in Rome, influenced the composer’s development.
