Abstract: Indire conducted a distance learning project in 2022-2023 involving six high schools, focusing on the analysis of the representation of the ‘Stranger’ in late 19th and early 20th century literature and iconography. The work is based on the publication Lo straniero di carta (The Stranger on Paper) (TAB 2020), which examined the bibliographic material of Indire’s Antiquarian Youth Literature Fund, texts that were already supporting moral and school education. The training sessions presented the Antiquarian Fund as a historical educational heritage, with phases of interaction and debate. The students, with the support of Indire teachers and referees, analysed original texts and illustrations, using bibliographic and digital tools. After assimilating the historical value of the sources, the students then delved into the editorial history, the denotative headwords and the themes tackled around topics such as immigration, foreignness, distance, inequality, loneliness, etc., re-analysing them from a current perspective, and finally creating a new video-textual Digital Storytelling narrative that was in tune or in contrast with the historical heritage of origin.
