Abstract: The contribution aims to illustrate the heuristic potential contained in the annual reports drawn up by peripheral inspectors to illustrate the material conditions of Italian schools in the second half of the 19th century. In particular, the reports produced during the 1880s and 1890s concerning the Molise area will be examined in order to highlight the possible narratives that these sources, not always explored exhaustively and with the necessary rigor, can offer for their use in the field of the Public History of Education.
