In nota alle Poesie di Ercole Tasso: una questione cronologica e il rapporto con La Virginia

Abstract

Il presente contributo intende mettere in discussione la presunta data di stampa (1593) della Virginia di Ercole Tasso, che uscì in realtà senza indicazione di luogo né di anno. Il confronto con la raccolta delle Poesie consente di ipotizzare che La Virginia preceda di circa un ventennio la stampa delle Poesie. Stabilito il rapporto cronologico tra le due raccolte, il saggio intende quindi mettere in luce le strategie di ristrutturazione dei testi dall’una all’altra, nonché il passaggio dalla dimensione teoretica del trattato a quella letteraria del canzoniere e, infine, la trasformazione delle allusioni cabalistiche, cui Tasso, pur sottraendo alla raccolta delle poesie le «imprese» e pur separando in due diversi libri i «misteri» dal testo poetico, sembra non voler rinunciare.

This study seeks to reconsider the traditionally accepted publication date (1593) of Virginia by Ercole Tasso—a work that, in fact, appeared without any indication of place or year. Through a comparative analysis with the collection Poesie, the essay advances the hypothesis that Virginia preceded the printing of the Poesie by roughly two decades. Having established the chronological relationship between the two collections, the discussion then turns to the strategies of textual restructuring from one to the other, examining, in particular, the shift from the theoretical dimension of the treatise to the literary mode of the canzoniere. Finally, the essay explores the transformation of Tasso’s cabalistic allusions—elements which, despite the removal of the “imprese” from the Poesie and the separation of the “misteri” into a distinct book, the author appears reluctant to relinquish entirely.
