The tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark (1600-1602), ruota intorno al
The fifth act of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark (1600-1602), centres on the duel between the eponymous hero and Laertes. The tragic climax is reached when the Prince of Denmark dies following an exchange of poisoned weapons. The two antagonists, ready to face the extreme consequences of their conflict, express, in a dispute distorted by the King, both the denial of suicide and the reversal of nemesis and, on the other hand, the annihilation of death through rebellion. From Shakespeare’s drama, through cinematic reinterpretations by Laurence Olivier, Franco Zeffirelli, and Kenneth Branagh, to Eugène Delacroix’s paintings, the brothers’ wager reflects modern man’s bewilderment in the face of the existential parable of disagreement between good and evil. This essay explores how the duel between Hamlet and Laertes, with all its different interpretations, acts as a mirror to help us understand the universal tensions of human existence, connecting to symbolic elements present in cinema and the visual arts. |
