Abstract: This article continues the contextualisation of the Pro Quinctio case addressed in the Festschrift für Johannes Michael Rainer. The works of Platschek, Metzger and Rüfner are accepted as authoritative but a closer look at the Roman economy and the late republican economic and political crises, resulting from internal and external wars may lead to another narrative than Cicero’s astute blame shifting and transformation of a court case into a morality play. The most striking example of which is found in the total silence on the lex Valeria de aere alieno. This essay attempts to sketch both the macro and micro political and economic circumstances, after which the facts and the ensuing proceedings shall be set out and interpreted.
