This work, which is a part of a more varied and in-depth study, in the form of an interview with Rino Caputo, professor of Italian literature, retraces and analyses the transformation of the literary genre of the novel in the transition between the XIXthand XXthcenturies in Italy. The contribution of notes and documents provides a necessary evidence of what is said and highlighted. A crystal clear path is outlined which, following conceptual knots and cross references, offers a meaningful literary and historical cross-section, which starts from Foscolo’s novel, and through Manzoni’s masterpiece and Verga’s novels reaches d’Annunzio and Pirandello, showing precious and appropriate synthesis, and with some incursions in the second half of the twentieth century.it_IT
