“Unification is a jackpot” – in South Korea!

Abstract

It was South Korea’s president Park Geun-hye who coined the Phrase “Unification is a Jackpot.” On being awarded an honorary doctorate by the Technical University of Dresden, Ms. Park delivered a speech outlining her vision and proposals for the unification of North and South Korea. If the North Korean government abandoned its nuclear programme, the Republic of Korea would be willing to improve the living conditions of the people living in the North by promoting infrastructure measures. The focus should be on the people and their needs (e.g., family reunions) as well as on narrowing the cultural distance between the two countries.

Dieser Slogan wurde von der südkoreanischen Präsidentin Park Geun-Hye geprägt. Park hielt im März 2014 anlässlich der Verleihung der Ehrendoktorwürde der Technischen Universität Dresden eine Rede, in der sie ihre Visionen und Angebote für eine Wiedervereinigung von Nord- und Südkorea darlegte: Wenn die Regierung Nordkoreas von ihrem Atomprogramm abrücke, sei die Republik Korea bereit, durch Infrastrukturmaßnahmen die Lebensverhältnisse der Menschen im Norden zu verbessern. Die Menschen und deren Bedürfnisse (z.B. nach Familientreffen) sollten im Mittelpunkt stehen, ebenso wie eine kulturelle Wiederannäherung.
