| dc.description.abstract | The Importance of Being Earnest è quel capolavoro teatrale di Wilde che ha dato non poco filo da
torcere ai traduttori italiani. Egli ha realizzato un
gioco di parole fra i termini “earnest” e “Ernest”,
omofoni su cui si basa l’ironia della commedia intera. In italiano non è possibile rendere “earnest”,
che racchiude l’idea dell’integrità morale, con un

| dc.description.abstract | The Importance of Being Earnest is Wilde's theatrical masterpiece which gave Italian translators a
lot of trouble. He created a play on words between
the terms "earnest" and "Ernest", homophones on
which the irony of the entire comedy is based. In
Italian it is not possible to translate "earnest",
which gives the idea of moral integrity, with a single term. Despite the effort, no solution is really
