Appunti per un’Antigone in Amazzonia

Abstract

Negli ultimi due decenni Milo Rau ha viaggiato per il mondo, denunciando crimini e genocidi attraverso i suoi lavori; si è soffermato “sul trattamento multimediale dei conflitti storici” anche attraverso le tragedie greche. Questo saggio analizza Antigone in the Amazon, una produzione in cui il mito antico incontra l’attivismo. Assieme ad attori brasiliani ed europei, musicisti e attivisti indigeni, Rau racconta la tragedia classica attraverso la vicenda del MST, un movimento di lavoratori che combatte per difendere l’Amazzonia. Tra sequenze filmate e azione dal vivo, eventi reali della storia brasiliana vengono ri-messi-in-azione sulla scena.

Over the last two decades, Milo Rau traveled around the world, working to denounce crimes and genocides through his works. He focused “on the multimedia treatment of historical and socio-political conflicts” through Greek tragedies as well. This essay examines in particular Antigone in the Amazon, a production where ancient myth meets modern-day activism. In collaboration with Brazilian and European actors, musicians, indigenous activists, Rau retells Sofocles’ tragedy through the story of MST, a Brazilian workers’ movement fighting against destruction of the Amazon rainforest. Through the usage and intermingling of filmed passages and live sequences, real events of Brazilian History are reenacted and find a new (“real”) life on stage.
