L'Incubo di Füssli e la Mirra alfieriana

Abstract

L’articolo analizza la tragedia Mirra di Alfieri, mettendola in relazione con il dipinto L’incubo di Füssli. Entrambe le opere esplorano la tensione psicologica e il tormento interiore delle protagoniste, Mirra e la fanciulla del quadro. La struttura della tragedia è simile a quella di una piramide rovesciata che rappresenta la discesa di Mirra nel baratro del senso di colpa. La luce del mondo esterno si fa sempre più lontana, mentre essa si avvicina all’oscurità e alla disperazione. I personaggi che la circondano come la madre Cecri e il promesso sposo Pereo, incarnano le diverse reazioni di fronte al suo tormento. Cecri, incapace di comprendere la figlia, rappresenta la realtà luminosa e l’ordine morale, mentre Pereo, attratto dall’abisso dell’amata, si lascia contagiare dal suo malessere. La nutrice, Euriclea, è l’unica a comprendere fin da subito la natura del tormento della protetta e ad offrire conforto e sostegno fino al momento del suicidio. Entrambe le opere, la tragedia e il dipinto, scavano i temi dell’angoscia, della passione proibita e della discesa nell’oscurità interiore.

The article analyzes the tragedy Mirra by Alfieri, putting it in relation with the painting The nightmare of Füssli. Both works explore the psychological tension and inner torment of the protagonists, Mirra and the girl in the picture. The structure of the tragedy is similar to that of an inverted pyramid representing the descent of Myrrha into the abyss of guilt. The light of the outside world is getting further and further away, as she approaches darkness and despair. The characters surrounding her, such as mother Cecri and the betrothed Pereo, embody the different reactions to her torment. Cecri, unable to understand his daughter, represents the luminous reality and moral order, while Pereo, attracted by the abyss of his beloved, is infected by her malaise. The nurse, Euriclea, is the only one to understand immediately the nature of the torment of the protected and to offer comfort and support until the moment of suicide. Both works, the tragedy and the painting, dig up the themes of anguish, forbidden passion and descent into inner darkness.
