Modern war-crimes investigations feature an unprecedented level of complexity, amplified by advanced technologies and sophisticated forensic practices. In contemporary conflicts, war-crimes allegations also serve as powerful weapons in strategic narratives, making a credible forensic capability vital to verify or refute claims. However, traditional military and institutional forensic teams are not equipped to process the massive volumes of multidisciplinary data generated on modern urban battlegrounds. This creates a critical paradox: independent NGOs and private investigative firms utilize cutting-edge, non-traditional techniques to conduct superior and more effective investigations and counter-investigations. To resolve this paradox, NATO must recognize war-crimes investigations not as peripheral, only-national functions, but as core strategic capabilities. The Alliance should establish a permanent, deployable, multinational standing investigative asset, potentially integrated into a NATO Constabulary Force or a Stability Policing framework. Supported by modern protocols, multidisciplinary expertise, reliable academic networks and emerging technologies, this dedicated capability would ensure that official findings match the highest scientific and legal standards and credibility, effectively safeguarding NATO’s ethical legitimacy and guaranteeing the undeniability of its strategic narrative.it_IT
