The paper focuses on the teaching of literature at university through online discussion. The theoretical premises for the necessity of integrating discussion-based techniques with the predominant lecture mode can be traced in the importance of modifying students’ merely receptive attitude, helping them develop the fundamental skills of reading, interpreting and criticizing literary texts. Compared to live discussions, electronic modalities have the advantage of providing a more relaxed atmosphere where social conventions are less important and this encourages positive interaction among students. The experimental use of a website (www.learningliterature.it) as a support to the traditional literary course for the students of the University of Salerno will be illustrated. The exploitation of an Internet forum used to improve the close reading skills of first and second year students will be especially discussed.it_IT
