L’articolo esamina il ruolo cruciale svolto dagli artisti nelle indagini antiquarie del Seicento, evidenziando come le loro opere abbiano significativamente influenzato la percezione e la documentazione delle antiche civiltà. La ricerca esplora, inoltre, il concetto di “maniera greca” e l’importanza del metodo di rappresentazione di artisti come François Duquesnoy e Nicolas Poussin, operativi a Roma durante quel periodo. Si sottolinea la rilevanza della riproduzione dell’antico come strumento metodologico, anticipando lo sviluppo della moderna disciplina archeologica. L’opera pionieristica di Cassiano dal Pozzo è messa in luce per aver introdotto un approccio combinante rigore scientifico e sensibilità artistica, gettando le basi per future indagini e studi stilistici.
