Abstract:

In The Waste Land e in The Great Gatsby il recupero delle figure classiche dei veggenti è caratterizzato da un processo di rovesciamento e demitizzazione. La verità ambigua di cui si fanno portavoce permette di cogliere il senso di crisi profonda che attraversa il primo dopoguerra, espresso dalle voci della Sibilla cumana, dell’indovino Tiresia e delle grottesche figure che assumono il ruolo di guida per l’umanità nella società novecente-sca dominata da materialismo e disillusione. In The Waste Land and in The Great Gatsby the voices of the ancient seers are trans-formed and reversed as they lose their mythical aura. The ambiguous truth they an-nounce reveals the sense of crisis which dominates the post-war society, expressed by the voices of the Cumaean Sybil, the blind seer Tiresias and the grotesque figures that become the only guides for humanity in a materialistic and disillusioned world.
