Abstract: This article is an attempt to establish the Western border of the Volga-Finnic migration on the basis of hydronymical data. V. N. Toporov and O. N. Trubachev claim that there are several Volgaic river names in the Upper Dnieper basin, but their examples are inadequate. In the author’s opinion, about 10 hydronyms in this region may be reliably attributed to the Volga-Finnic (Mordvinic) languages. A half of them are located in the basin of the Sozh, but the separate ones are scattered over the whole right-bank part of the Upper Dnieper basin.
