Abstract: The essay analyzes the functions of the “brotherhood” in the formation of family dynamics in Fiesta al Noroeste, a novel by Ana María Matute published in 1953. The study aims to show how the horizontal relationships within the fraternal subsystem are capable of influencing and determining the internaldynamics of the family system, re-modulating the concept of family itself described by the author and relating to Spain during the first Francoism. The critical analysis is based, particularly, on the main studies related to the concept of “brotherhood”, like those carried out by René Kaës and Luis Kancyper on the “fraternal complex”.
