Abstract: The research intends to explain what is the origin of the nickname sophόs that populus gave to Sempronio Sofo. It becames his last name. Through the History of Livius we can know Sofo, first tribunus plebis, then pontifex, as a law expert. He attempted as a tribune to force Appius Claudius Caecus to charge the censorship through the interpretation of the ius civile and the law.
