Abstract: | Between July and September 1924 Umberto of Savoy, Prince of Piedmont and hair to the Italian throne, embarked on a journey taking him to Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. The trip was to all intents and purposes a diplomatic mission and was encouraged by the Fascist goverment wich saw it as an opportunity to establish a bond with the numerous immigrants of Italian origin and their descendants who had started a new life in Latina America. One of objectives of the visit was in fact to advertise through the figure of the young prince a positive image of the new goverment (not yet explicity a “regime”) and of the House of Savoy. This research article follows Umberto’s itinerary, focussing especially on the Argentinian leg of the journey, taking into account sources ranging from newspapers and periodicals, narrative literature and the officials reports published after the visit. |
