Abstract: In this investigation article, according to the Thorstein Veblen ́s ap-proach, the censorship of literature is analyzed as a phenomenon that can be considered an institution because it involves aspects such as instinctive conservatism and aversion to change. It begins with a conceptual frame-work on the censorship of literature and institutions, in order to illustrate the main ideas of Veblen’s theory on institutions in the second part of the article, followed in the third part by the examination of how this phenom-enon can be analyzed under the light of institutional theory based on what has happened in Latin American territories such as Colombia. It is found that it is possible to highlight the validity of Veblenian thought with stud-ies of this type, which allow us to understand how censorship of literature is an institution with characteristics that facilitate it to adapt and remain in force for generations.
