Abstract: The aim of my PhD dissertation “Paideia and myth. The political function of mythopoiesis in Timaeus, Critias and Republic X” is to analyze the political and educational relevance of some of Plato’s myths. I will try to identify the main addressee that Plato had in mind for certain dialogues or for some mythical sections of his dialogues. I will consider book X of the Republic, the Timaeus, and the Critias: these dialogues mightpresuppose respectively an audience of non-philosophers, philosophers, and warriors and be intended to spread the necessary virtues to transform this audience in the citizens of the perfect city described in the Republic. Therefore, I will try to prove that Plato intended the political reform of the Republic an indispensable project, and that he tried to establish it with the diffusion of some myths.
