Abstract: This paper intends to investigate the interplay of text and image in contemporary forms of travel literature: modern travelogues and travel guides. Attention will mainly be given to on-line guides as well as websites for tourism purposes, such as city portals. The effects of intermediality on the configuration of tourist destinations in modern tourist guides and in particular in the new media will be discussed with the use of different examples such as the city of Hamburg: narrative descriptions from the 18th Century will be compared to websites of today, in order to study the specific transformations affecting language, layout, etc. The paper will also put forward several didactic recommendations which can be useful in teaching German as a foreign language.
