Francesco Algarotti: l'illuminismo riformatore in dialogo con l'arte

Abstract

Il saggio si propone di esaminare l’importante figura di Algarotti, fra i principali Illuministi italiani ed europei, tenuto in grande considerazione in molte Corti e Stati, come esperto e teorico d’arte: ragione, immaginario, stile, cultura e arte (soprattutto figurativa) sono inscindibili fra loro per Algarotti e rappresentano il cuore di quell'Illuminismo a tutto tondo che ormai prevale negli sudi rispetto alle vecchie schematizzazioni e Algarotti è a livello europeo uno dei maggiori esempi in tal senso. Il tutto esaminato attraverso il suo fondamentale rapporto di amicizia e collaborazione con il grande Giambattista Tiepolo che non poco dovette alla stretta contiguità con Algarotti e alla presenza assidua di Algarotti a Venezia, città fra le più importanti in Europa per la nuova pittura nel Settecento.

This essay examines the important figure of Algarotti, one of the leading Italian and European Enlightenment thinkers, held in high regard in many courts and states as an art expert and theorist. For Algarotti, reason, imagination, style, culture and art (especially figurative art) are inseparable and represent the heart of the comprehensive Enlightenment that now prevails in studies over older schematizations and Algarotti is one of the greatest examples of this at the European level. This is examined through his crucial friendship and collaboration with the great Giambattista Tiepolo, who owed much to his close proximity to Algarotti and to Algarotti’s assiduous presence in Venice, one of the most important cities in Europe for the new painting of the eighteenth century.
