Visioni del conforto in Ercole Tasso
Abstract
Il confortatore di Ercole Tasso fu pubblicato nel
1595 come un riadattamento e una traduzione in
volgare italiano di una fortunata opera elaborata
dal gesuita Juan de Polanco. Il libro di Tasso fu
concepito come un manuale destinato ai membri
dell’élite di Bergamo, arruolati nella maggiore
confraternita della città, allo scopo di ammaestrarli su come consolare i moribondi e come assistere i condannati a morte. Questo saggio ricostruisce la genesi del testo e lo confronta con
quello di Polanco, cercando di individuare le differenze tra i due scritti, di elencare le fonti usate da
Tasso e di mettere a fuoco l’eccentrica cultura religiosa dell’autore. Il confortatore (The Comforter) by Ercole Tasso
was published in 1595 as a readaptation and
translation into the Italian vernacular of a
successful work by the Jesuit Juan de Polanco.
Tasso's book was conceived as a manual intended
for members of Bergamo's elite, enrolled in the
city's largest confraternity, with the aim of
teaching them how to console the dying and how
to assist those condemned to death. This essay
reconstructs the genesis of the text and compares
it with Polanco’s, attempting to identify the
differences between the two works, to list the
sources used by Tasso, and to focus on the author's
idiosyncratic religious culture.
