Duelli fra irredentisti: il caso di Scipio Slataper

Abstract

Scipio Slataper, durante la sua breve vita, si trova coinvolto in due sfide a duello. Una nel 1912 contro Ruggero Timeus e l’altra nel 1915 contro Attilio Tamaro. In entrambi i casi lo scontro non avverrà per il sottrarsi da parte di uno dei contendenti. Le motivazioni che portano alle liti non sono di tipo personale, ma politico. I protagonisti infatti, pur appartenendo tutti al variegato mondo dell’irredentismo giuliano, sono divisi dal modo di concepire l’idea di nazione e da come immaginano il rapporto con i popoli vicini. Non è un caso che una certa eco a questi eventi venne data anche da alcuni quotidiani dell’epoca che trattavano i problemi del confine orientale. Attraverso la rilettura degli articoli sul tema pubblicati in quegli anni e di alcune lettere (edite ed inedite) dei protagonisti sull’argomento, l’intervento si propone di ricostruire il contesto e le motivazioni che portarono allo scontro e le successive conseguenze.

Scipio Slataper, during his short life, was involved in two duels. One in 1912 against Ruggero Timeus and the other in 1915 against Attilio Tamaro. In both cases the clash did not occur because one of the contenders withdrew. The reasons that led to the disputes were not personal, but political. In fact, the protagonists, although they all belonged to the varied world of Julian irredentism, were divided in their way of conceiving the idea of nation and how they imagined the relationship with neighboring peoples. It is no coincidence that a certain echo of these events was also given by some newspapers of the time that dealt with the problems of the eastern border. Through the rereading of the articles on the subject published in those years and some letters (published and unpublished) of the protagonists on the subject, the intervention aims to reconstruct the context and the motivations that led to the clash and the subsequent consequences.
