Martiri di una dolorosa normalità. Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien della Fura dels Baus (1997)
Abstract
Among the most extreme expressions of contemporary theatre, the Catalan group of the Fura dels Baus gained international attention for the originality of a scenic language that has gone beyond the traditional statutes of the theater in the name of exploring codes from multiple fields of contemporaneity. In 1997, the group curated the installation of Le martyre de saint Sébastien (1911), by Claude Debussy and Gabriele D’Annunzio, which offered to the group the opportunity to reflect on martyrdom as a reflection of a normality based on the experience of pain and marginalization. D’Annunzio’s original play also offers itself generously to “heretical” reinterpretations, responding to strong questions about the relationship between man and his time.
