Abstract: Both in everyday life and in queer and transfeminist theory, more and more attention has been paid in recent years to language, especially with regard to gender identity. The ‘social categories’ men and women are no longer sufficient to capture the many facets that define a person. Therefore, social research, which is concerned with investigating reality in its entirety, needs to rethink its methodologies of inquiry. The qualitative or quantitative method often operates through a binary categorization between male and female, but numerous innovative examples can be found in today’s practice. The introduction of gender identity questions is meant to represent an increasingly multifaceted and diverse system, but also to give voice to those subjectivities that would otherwise remain excluded from research and statistics. How, then, to achieve a fully inclusive sociology? This paper will attempt to answer these questions through an analysis coming from queer studies and feminist methodology, while also exploring international research on the LGBTQ+ universe.
